FAVORITES FACE FREE AGENCY QUESTIONS

Falling painfully short of their second World Series championship in three years, the Astros open up as the 2020 title favorites. While Justin Verlander and Zach Greinke are expected back in the team’s starting rotation, 29-year-old Gerrit Cole will be the most sought-after free agent on the market after a Cy Young-quality season that saw him finish 20-5 with a 2.50 ERA and 0.89 WHIP.

World Series MVP Stephen Strasburg opted-out of the remaining four years and $100 million on his contract on Saturday, setting himself up for an even bigger payday.

The 31-year-old went 5-0 with a 1.98 ERA in six postseason appearances with 47 strikeouts in 36 ⅓ innings. His career playoff ERA (1.46) is also third-lowest among qualified pitchers.

Unfortunately for the Nationals, October-hero Anthony Rendon is also a free agent. After a career-year led to his first All-Star appearance, the 29-year-old third baseman turned it up another notch in the playoffs, reaching base in 15 of 17 games and swatting critical home runs in Game 6 and Game 7 of the Fall Classic.

You simply can’t bet on Houston (+500) or Washington (+800) until seeing if their star players re-sign. And while MLB free agency does begin today, it’s rare that big names fly off the board on Day 1 so we all might be in for a bit of a wait.

OTHER BIG MARKET CONTENDERS

The Yankees (+700) will of course be linked to both Cole and Strasburg, but it has been awhile since GM Brian Cashman has spent big. Coming off only their second title-less decade since the 1920s, New York also has a few big free-agent questions of their own with closer Aroldis Chapman expected to opt-out of his deal and shortstop Didi Gregorius hitting the open market.

The Dodgers just can’t seem to get over the hump, but +800 is decent value for a 106-win club with deep pockets and only one notable player (Hyun-Jin Ryu) free to sign elsewhere.

Los Angeles could replace their South Korean Cy Young-contender with the California-native Cole and still have room to sign Rendon or swing a deal for a star play such as Francisco Lindor.

With likely NL MVP Cody Bellinger already on the roster, the Dodgers will become the betting favorite if they land a big fish or two in free agency, so the best time to buy is now.

One month into the college football season and things don’t really look how we expected.
