National Championship Odds Update After Tigers Tame Alabama in Week 11

  • Ohio State (+200) remains BetOnline’s slight favorite to win the national championship
  • Alabama (+900) could miss the college football playoffs after losing to LSU (+250)
  • Georgia (+900), Oklahoma (+1600) and Oregon (+2500) will battle the Crimson Tide for the last playoff berth

After snapping an eight-game losing streak to Alabama with a 46-41 victory Saturday, LSU moved to No. 1 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings.

Just ahead of the Tigers at +250, Ohio State (+200) remains the betting favorites to win the national championship after crushing Maryland 73-14, while the Crimson Tide fell all the way to +900 from +275 just last week.

A 55-10 win over NC State helped undefeated Clemson (+300) claim a comfortable No. 3 ranking, but the fourth playoff spot remains completely up in the air. Let’s look at the latest odds at BetOnline and examine the teams that could sneak into the College Football Playoff.

2020 CFP NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP ODDS

Team Current Odds Trending Last Week
Ohio State +200 +250
LSU +250 +400
Clemson +300 +350
Alabama +900 +275
Georgia +900 +1000
Oklahoma +1600 +2000
Oregon +2500 +3300
Utah +4000 +5000
Minnesota +5000 +15000
Baylor +6600 +10000
Penn State +10000 +1800
Florida +15000 +25000
Cincinnati +50000 +50000

ALABAMA

Nick Saban’s club is in danger of missing the College Football Playoff for the first time since the format started six seasons ago. While Alabama eventually pulled within five points of LSU, they trailed 33-13 at the half and never had the ball in the second half within a score.

Sitting with zero quality wins on the season, the Crimson Tide’s best hope to make the playoffs is to demolish Auburn in Week 14 and hope that Georgia suffers its second loss.

While a berth in the final four is not looking good at the moment, it’s important to remember that the selection committee is ultimately just trying to put together a quality TV product that draws ratings, so don’t count Alabama out just yet.

GEORGIA

The Bulldogs currently sit at No. 4 in the CFP committee’s top 25, but a spot in the playoff is still very much in flux. Georgia’s résumé is padded by strong victories over Notre Dame and Florida, but their home loss to unranked South Carolina is close to unforgivable.

If Jake Fromm and company can escape this Saturday’s road date with No. 13 Auburn unscathed, look for their national title odds to shoot up significantly from +900.

However, a Tigers win over the Bulldogs would be huge for Oregon, who suffered their only loss of the season to Auburn in Week 1, and potentially even bigger for ‘Bama’s playoff chances.

OTHER PLAYOFF HOPEFULS

Oklahoma narrowly escaped a second-straight loss to an unranked opponent last weekend when Iowa State dropped a two-point conversion pass that would’ve completed a 21-point Cyclones comeback. Sitting at +1600 to win the national title, the Sooners need to blowout No. 10 Baylor this Saturday and then get some serious help.

Both Oregon (+2500) and Utah (+4000) are in the same boat. They need the other to win their remaining games to improve their stock leading up to the Pac-12 title game, with the winner of that theoretical contest having an outside shot at the fourth playoff slot.

Minnesota (+5000) remains undefeated after a 31-26 home win over a previously-unbeaten Penn State squad. Currently ranked eighth by the CFP committee, the Gophers have more work ahead of them than anyone.

To make the playoffs, Minnesota will have to defeat No. 23 Iowa, Northwestern and No. 15 Wisconsin to close the season at 12-0, and then give Ohio State a serious run for their money in the Big Ten conference championship game.

One month into the college football season and things don’t really look how we expected.
