The Los Angeles Rams will be desperate for a win to remain in the hunt for a playoff spot in the NFC when they host the Chicago Bears this weekend on Sunday Night Football as 6.5-point favorites on the NFL betting odds.
Los Angeles saw a two-game straight-up win streak snapped with last weekend’s ugly 17-12 loss in Pittsburgh, dumping the team’s record to a middling 5-4 going into Sunday night’s matchup at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
NFC champions last season, the Rams opened the season in impressive fashion, posting three straight wins, but have struggled since, falling to defeat in four of six outings. That run includes home losses to Tampa Bay and San Francisco as NFL betting favorites. Now lagging 1.5 games back of the Minnesota Vikings in the race for the second NFC wild card, Los Angeles has seen its odds of making the playoffs fall to +250. The Rams have also tumbled to a +1600 wager on the NFL lines to repeat as NFC champions.
While the Rams’ lone home victory during their current shaky six-game run has come against the winless Cincinnati Bengals, they have regularly run up the score when playing on home turf. Los Angeles has scored 29 or more points in nine of 13 home games since the start of the 2018 NFL football season, recording a 10-3 SU record during that stretch.
However, the Rams have struggled to consistently reward bettors during that stretch, going 2-2 against the NFL spread at home this season, and a middling 6-5-2 ATS in their past 13 overall home contests.
Los Angeles has also turned in mixed results when pegged as home favorites of six or more points on the NFL odds. The Rams have won outright in eight of 10, but are 3-4-1 ATS over their past eight. And even after surrendering just 10 points to the lowly Bengals in Week 8, the Rams have surrendered a worrisome 29.75 points per game over their eight most recent home games while favored by six or more points.
The Rams’ recent record against Chicago provides sports bettors with no reassurance. The team has lost outright in six of seven meetings with the Bears since 2003, including a 1-3 SU mark on home turf, and has covered in just two of nine overall matchups over the past 20 years.
Bears Struggling Lately Both SU and vs. Spread
Timing may favor the Rams as the Bears arrive in town looking to tally consecutive wins for the first time since Week 4. Like the Rams, Chicago soared last season, winning 12 games to claim its first NFC North title since 2010. However, the Bears have failed to carry over that momentum from last season, falling out of playoff contention with SU and ATS losses in four of five outings.
The Bears stopped the bleeding with last weekend’s 20-13 victory over the visiting Detroit Lions as 6.5-point home chalk, but remain winless in their past two road contests, including a 24-21 loss in Oakland as 6.5-point favorites that kicked off the team’s recent four-game slide.
Offensive production has been a major issue for the Bears all season long. With quarterback Mitch Trubisky struggling to regain last season’s form, Chicago has averaged just 18.7 points over its past six games, fueling a 4-2 run for the UNDER in totals betting.
And while the Bears have enjoyed success in recent appearances in prime time, going 4-1 SU over their past five overall, consistency has eluded them when playing on Sunday Night Football. Chicago has picked up the win in its past two Sunday Night Football appearances, including a 15-6 home win over the Rams in Week 14 of last season, but is winless in its past three road appearances, averaging just 18 points per game.
