Updated National Title Odds After Week 6 of College Football Season

  • BetOnline has updated its National Championship odds ahead of Week 7 of the college football season
  • Ohio State is now at +500 after defeating a ranked Michigan State squad, sitting behind only Alabama and Clemson (+275)
  • Florida’s win over Auburn moved the Gators to 33/1, but they’ll face a stiff test at No. 5 LSU this Saturday

After spending the first month of the college football season beating up on low-level competition, both No. 1 Alabama and No. 2 Clemson had a bye in the first weekend of October. (I presume Nick and Dabo went apple-picking or something.)

The second-tier of contenders also enjoyed relatively stress-free Week 6 contests, with No. 3 Georgia taking down Tennessee (43-14), No. 4 Ohio State toppling No. 25 Michigan State (34-10), No. 5 LSU defeating Utah State (42-6), and No. 6 Oklahoma dusting Kansas (45-20).

The Buckeyes game was one of just three match-ups between ranked opponents on last Saturday’s slate. Let’s take a look at how the results of the weekend’s two biggest battles impacted the odds at BetOnline.

2020 CFP NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP ODDS

Team Odds
Alabama +275
Clemson +275
Ohio State +500
Georgia +700
LSU +700
Oklahoma +800
Wisconsin +2000
Florida +3300
Penn State +3300
Auburn +4000
Michigan +4000
Notre Dame +5000
Oregon +5000
Texas +5000
Utah +5000
Texas A&M +8000
Baylor +10000
Iowa +12500

OHIO STATE VS MICHIGAN STATE

Facing their first ranked opponent of the year, the Buckeyes took a while to warm up against the Spartans, gaining just 16 yards on 16 first-quarter plays.

After accounting for 23 touchdowns in his first five games as starter, Heisman-candidate Justin Fields eventually got things rolling in the second quarter, finishing with 206 yards passing, 2 TDs, 1 INT and another 61 yards and a score on the ground.

Junior running back J.K. Dobbins was even more impressive, breaking a 67-yard touchdown run late in the first half en route to a 172-yard day.

When factoring in yet another dominant defensive performance, Ryan Day’s club is starting to look like a serious contender for the No. 1 seed in the College Football Playoff.

Tied with Georgia at +650 last week, Ohio State now has the third-best odds to win the national title at +500.

FLORIDA VS AUBURN

Swimming along at 5-0, No. 7 Auburn found themselves in the clenches of the Gators’ jaws last weekend.

Freshman QB Bo Nix completed only 11 of 27 passes for 145 yards and threw three interceptions in the 24-13 loss that dropped Auburn from +2500 title favorites last week to +4000 today.

Florida QB Kyle Trask was knocked out of the game in the second quarter, but returned to throw for 234 yards and two touchdowns. Considering the team already lost Feleipe Franks to a season-ending ankle injury in Week 2, they’ll need a healthy Trask against No. 5 LSU next Saturday.

After improving their national championship odds from +5000 to +3300 with the win over Auburn, the No. 7 Gators will make another huge leap if their defense can tame an even fiercer group of Tigers in Week 7.

LSU currently ranks No. 2 in the country in total offense, averaging 571 yards a game, while QB Joe Burrow is No. 2 in the nation in passing yards per game with 372.8.

Interestingly, however, Florida coach Dan Mullen has had Ed Orgeron’s number historically, defeating the LSU coach, 27-19, last season while racking up 391 yards of total offense. Back in 2017, his Mississippi State squad beat the Tigers, 37-7.

It all sets the table for a heated Week 7 contest in Death Valley that will knock one of these two teams out of the national championship hunt.
