Stanley Cup Odds Prior to 2019-20 NHL Season Opener

  • BetOnline has updated its Stanley Cup odds for all 31 NHL teams before puck drop on Wednesday.
  • The Lightning (+700) are the favorites, but teams like the Panthers (+1600) and Stars (+2000) are trending upwards
  • The Bruins (+1400) and Blues’ (+1600) title odds have fallen in recent months

After a summer of long, drawn-out restricted-free-agent negotiations with many of the league’s top stars, the NHL season is finally getting underway on Wednesday.

Since the last check-in way back in June, there have understandably been big swings in the 2020 Stanley Cup odds at BetOnline. Let’s check out all the risers and fallers.

SURGING STANLEY CUP ODDS

With dynamic RFA Brayden Point wrapped on an affordable bridge deal, Tampa Bay is now at 7/1 to hoist Lord Stanley (8/1 in June).

It’s hard to argue with oddsmakers given the Lightning set an NHL record with 62 regular-season wins last year and have the favorites to win the Hart, Art Ross, Norris and Vezina trophies on their roster.

Two hundred miles southeast, the Panthers’ Cup odds are hotter than the Miami sun, rising from 25/1 to 16/1 in just three months. Florida brought in two-time Vezina winner Sergei Bobrovsky and Joel Quenneville, a coach with three rings and a killer mustache, to join underrated Finnish superstar Aleksander Barkov.

However, considering the organization’s sad history, +180 to miss the playoffs might be the superior play.

The Coyotes are up to 25/1 (33/1 in June) following their trade for six-time 30-goal scorer Phil Kessel, and both the Devils and Rangers went from 66/1 to 25/1 after drafting Jack Hughes and Kaapo Kakko with the first two picks in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft.

The Central Divsion’s Dallas Stars have jumped from 28/1 to 20/1 in recent months, but I still believe they’re one of the top value bets on the board.

FALLING STANLEY CUP ODDS

Boston’s title odds have fallen from 9/1 to 14/1, but for better or worse, these are the same Bruins who cruised to last year’s Cup final before falling apart on home ice in Game 7 against St. Louis.

The Blues seemingly bolstered their chances to repeat by acquiring Justin Faulk from the Hurricanes and wrapping up 24-year-old defenseman on a long-term extension, but their Cup odds went from 12/1 in the summer to 16/1 today.

Washington has kept the core of their 2018 championship club intact, but Alexander Ovechkin and company have gone from 16-1 to 20-1 longshots in the past three months.

San Jose’s odds took the exact same nosedive, which probably doesn’t bode well for 40-year-old Joe Thornton, who recently signed on for one more year.

Finally, no team’s odds plummeted further than the poor Blue Jackets, who experienced a mass exodus over the summer. After losing star players Artemi Panarin, Matt Duchene and Sergei Bobrovsky to free agency, Columbus went from 28/1 to 50/1 to win the Stanley Cup.

One month into the college football season and things don’t really look how we expected.
