National Championship Odds Update After Georgia Gags in Week 7

  • BetOnline has updated its National Championship odds after Week 7 of the college football season
  • LSU (+550) and Oklahoma (+600) rise up the board following Georgia’s shocking loss to South Carolina
  • Wisconsin’s fourth shutout of the year moved the Badgers up to +1600

Georgia’s 20-17 double-overtime loss to unranked South Carolina delivered the first major shake-up to the college football season.

The only silver-lining for coach Kirby Smart after Jake Fromm’s three-interception meltdown is that the defeat will likely save his team the trouble of making the CFP and inevitably losing to Alabama for the third-straight year.

While Georgia’s playoff chances aren’t completely dead, they’ll have to go undefeated the rest of the way with the meat of their schedule (Florida, Auburn and Texas A&M) still to come, not to mention a potential SEC Championship Game.

Let’s look at how the rest of the Week 7 action impacted the national title odds at BetOnline.

2020 CFP NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP ODDS

Team Odds
Alabama +250
Clemson +250
Ohio State +500
LSU +550
Oklahoma +600
Georgia +1200
Wisconsin +1600
Florida +3300
Penn State +2500
Auburn +4000
Michigan +4000
Notre Dame +4000
Utah +4000
Florida +5000
Oregon +5000
Baylor +6600
Texas A&M +8000

LSU TIGERS

Joe Burrow continued to prove he’s the real deal, throwing for 293 yards and three touchdowns against a fierce Florida defense that ranked 11th nationally coming in and beat up on Auburn just last week.

LSU’s quick-strike attack scored five times on drives of five plays or less in the 42-28 dismantling of No. 7 Florida.

The team has now put up 40+ points in every game this season, surpassing 500 yards of total offense in each of the past four contests.

Sitting at 6-0, the Tigers (+550) are now viewed as a top-four contender for the national title with a Nov. 9 matchup at Alabama looming large on the schedule.

OKLAHOMA SOONERS

Oklahoma avenged last year’s Red River Showdown defeat with a dazzling defensive performance that has everyone singing the praises of new DC Alex Grinch.

The Sooners sacked Sam Ehlinger nine times in the 34-27 victory, pressuring the Texas quarterback on 15 of his 47 dropbacks. On the other side of the ball, Lincoln Riley’s offense failed to extend their ten-game streak of scoring 40 or more points.

Jalen Hurts wasn’t his usual dominant self, completing only 16-of-28 passes with two turnovers, but the Heisman contender did hook up with receiver CeeDee Lamb for 171 yards and three scores.

At +600, Oklahoma’s championship odds sit just behind LSU and rest comfortably in the top five.

WISCONSIN BADGERS

With a 38-0 win over Michigan State, the Badgers’ defense has already posted four shutouts this season, scoring as many touchdowns (four) as they’ve allowed over the first six games.

Bullying Big Ten opponents, Wisconsin held Michigan State to 149 yards of offense, and limited Michigan to 299 back in Week 3.

If they can do the same to Ohio State on Oct. 26, the Badgers and star running back Jonathan Taylor (18 total touchdowns this season) will finally have to be taken seriously as a national championship contender.

Right now, Wisconsin’s odds (+1600) are seventh-best in the nation, but you have to wonder why they’re sitting behind Georgia (+1200) and its moribund offense.

Are NFL Players Safer Without Hip Drop Tackle?

Last offseason, the NFL decided to ban the hip drop tackle. For those unaware, a hip drop tackle occurs when a tackler wraps up a ball carrier with both hands or arms then swivels his hips and unweights himself (leaves his feet) to complete the tackle.
