Heisman Trophy Odds After Week 9: Burrow Now The Man To Beat

  • BetOnline added Ohio State’s Chase Young to its 2019 Heisman futures board after the defensive end’s star-making Week 9 performance
  • Jalen Hurts (+225) remains in contention despite Oklahoma’s upset loss
  • LSU’s Joe Burrow (-125) is now the heavy favorite to hoist the bronze statue

Chase Young introduced himself to casual sports fans on Saturday with a monstrous game (four sacks, five tackles for loss, two forced fumbles) against a Wisconsin offensive line that is accustomed to playing the bully, not the role of the dweeb who gets shoved into a locker.

While the Heisman Trophy has only been awarded to a defensive player once in its history (Charles Woodson at Michigan in 1997), Ohio State’s 6-foot-6, 270-pound behemoth is now firmly in the conversation.

With Young added to the field of five players, let’s look at the latest Heisman odds at BetOnline and try to determine who’s in the driver’s seat.

2019 NCAA HEISMAN TROPHY ODDS

Player (Position, Team) Odds
Joe Burrow (QB, LSU) -125
Jalen Hurts (QB, Oklahoma) +225
Tua Tagovailoa (QB, Alabama) +500
Justin Fields (QB, Ohio State) +600
Chase Young (DE, Ohio State) +2500

JOE BURROW GAINS GROUND ON JALEN HURTS

Joe Burrow’s magical season keeps on getting better. While the LSU senior was already doing everything in his power to win the Heisman (2,805 passing yards, 30 TDs, 4 INTs; 3 rushing TDs), now the things out of his control are also setting up nicely for him to claim the bronze statue.

First, award-favorite Tua Tagovailoa suffered a high ankle sprain in Week 8 that caused his Heisman odds to tumble. Then, Oklahoma was surprisingly upset by Kansas State in Week 9 despite Jalen Hurts compiling 490 yards of total offense and four touchdowns.

Hurts remains a strong Heisman contender (+225), but the loss will almost certainly knock the Sooners out of the College Football Playoff. That’s bad news for the dual-threat star considering Lamar Jackson is the only winner not to appear in the CFP since the format began in 2014.

Meanwhile, Burrow put together his eighth 300-yard game of the season in Week 9, accounting for one passing touchdown, one interception and one rushing touchdown in a hard-fought 23-20 victory over Auburn.

If the 22-year-old Tiger can topple Alabama and a potentially-hobbled Tagovailoa on Nov. 9th, his magical Heisman-season will be all but complete.

CHASE YOUNG JOINS JUSTIN FIELDS IN HEISMAN HUNT

Justin Fields quietly jumped from +900 last week to +600 after putting up two touchdown passes and a rushing score in the Buckeyes’ 38-7 demolition of Wisconsin, but it was his teammate Chase Young who stole all the headlines.

Defensive players have been virtually excluded from Heisman consideration, but engage me in a quick thought exercise.

Say that Young continues to lead the country in sacks (he has 13.5 now with a sack in ten-consecutive games) and Ohio State is eventually crowned National Champion, will voters ignore a guy that his coach Ryan Day says this about:

He’s the most dominant player in college football. He completely changes the game.

Or this:

The best I’ve been around. I had a chance to see Nick Bosa last year and I coached in the NFL and saw some really good players at different times. But he is as good as I’ve been around, again, because he’s so versatile.”

At +2500, Young is still a longshot considering historical tendencies of Heisman voters, but with Ohio State primed to play a lot more games on the big stage, it’s a wager worth making.
