Super Bowl Odds After Week 7: Title Contenders Overcome Adversity

  • The latest Super Bowl odds see the Saints (+550) as the NFC’s best team
  • The Patriots are the heavy title favorites (+250) after starting the season 7-0.
  • The Vikings, Cowboys and Rams are all back up to +1600 after big Week 7 wins

With Patrick Mahomes expected to miss at least three games with a dislocated kneecap, Kansas City’s Super Bowl odds hit a new season-low at +1000.

The Chiefs would seem to have little shot at beating Green Bay or Minnesota over the next two weeks with Matt Moore under center, but tell that to the Panthers and Saints. Their backups, Kyle Allen and Teddy Bridgewater, are a combined 9-0 since taking over for Cam Newton and Drew Brees, respectively.

Given Mahomes is out of commission and New England is on cruise control, let’s focus our Week 7 update on the much more competitive National Football Conference. All odds available at BetOnline.

NEW ORLEANS SAINTS

The Saints’ odds dropped all the way down to +2000 following Drew Brees’ Week 2 thumb injury, but after the team’s fifth-straight victory — a 36-25 beatdown the Bears at Soldier Field — New Orleans is now the favorite to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl.

No amount of adversity can sink the Saints. After the Minneapolis Miracle kept Sean Payton’s club out of the 2018 NFC Championship Game, one of the most egregious non-calls in the history of professional sports probably cost New Orleans a championship last season if you consider how lackluster both the Patriots and Rams looked in New England’s yawn-inducing 13-3 victory.

Nothing has been easy in the Big Easy, but the Saints look like the best team in the NFL this season with a strong defense led by DE Cameron Jordan and CB Marshon Lattimore and an offense capable of overcoming the losses of both Brees and star running back Alvin Kamara.

With the Super Bowl back in Miami for the first time since 2010 (the last time New Orleans won the title), maybe the Saints will finally catch a break.

OTHER NFC TEAMS OVERCOMING ADVERSITY

While preseason title hopefuls like the Bears, Eagles and Falcons crumbled in Week 7, the Vikings, Cowboys and Rams all answered the bell under heavy pressure.

Facing an insurgence from receivers Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs after an ugly 16-6 loss to Chicago in Week 4, Kirk Cousins has now thrown for 976 yards and 10 touchdowns (with only one pick) in three straight wins. With NFL rushing leader Dalvin Cook (725 yards, 8 TDs) in the backfield, Minnesota suddenly has one of the most balanced, explosive attacks in football.

Entering Sunday night with three-straight losses, the vultures were again circling overhead Jason Garrett before the Cowboys trounced Philadelphia in front of Al and Cris. Now sitting with a 4-3 record, Dallas looks like the class of the NFC East and will enjoy a well-timed bye week where Amari Cooper and the offensive line can get back to full health.

After trading the farm for cornerback Jalen Ramsey earlier in the week, the Rams also ended their three-game skid with a 37-10 spanking of Atlanta.

While Wade Phillips can be counted on to put together a top-ten defense the rest of the way, the questions surrounding Jared Goff (is he bad?), Todd Gurley (will he ever be the same again?) and Sean McVay (has the league caught up with him?) will continue to be asked for the foreseeable future.

Los Angeles gets to tee-off on the winless Bengals next week and then gets a bye before starting a three-game stretch against above-average defenses (Steelers, Bears Ravens), so stay tuned!

One month into the college football season and things don’t really look how we expected.
