National Championship Odds Update After Week 8

  • The updated 2020 CFP Championship odds saw Alabama drop to +300 after Tua Tagovailoa suffered a high-ankle sprain
  • Clemson (+250) has moved back into top spot on the futures board
  • Wisconsin (+5000) dropped out of contention after a shocking 24-23 loss to Illinois

In life, everyone deserves a second chance. In college football, schools rarely get one.

One week after a surprise loss to South Carolina sent Georgia tumbling down the rankings, Wisconsin became the latest top-ten team to fall from grace, losing to Illinois (24-23) as 30-point favorites.

Listed with the seventh-highest odds (+1600) to win the National Championship just last week, the Badgers’ title hopes are now circling the drain at +5000.

Let’s look at how the rest of the Week 8 action impacted the national title odds at BetOnline.

2020 CFP NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP ODDS

Team Odds
Clemson +250
Alabama +300
Ohio State +450
LSU +500
Oklahoma +600
Georgia +1400
Penn State +2000
Oregon +3300
Auburn +5000
Florida +5000
Wisconsin +5000
Utah +6600
Baylor +8000
Notre Dame +8000

CLEMSON MOVES AHEAD OF ALABAMA

Clemson is once again the National Championship favorite after Tua Tagovailoa sprained his ankle in Alabama’s 35-13 win over Tennessee.

With an easy game against Arkansas and a bye on the schedule over the next two weeks, the Crimson Tide quarterback should be healthy to face No. 2 LSU on Nov. 9th, but there’s enough mystery in the air to muddy the waters.

Strangely enough, Clemson’s ascension to the top of the board comes in the same week as the Tigers dropped to No. 3 in The Associated Press college football poll. Trevor Lawrence now has eight interceptions on the season after throwing two more picks in a 45-10 win over Louisville.

Clemson’s unimpressive resume includes a victory against a ranked opponent that is no longer ranked (Texas A&M) and a one-point win against a North Carolina team that is currently 3-4.

WISCONSIN’S RUN IS OVER

After pitching four shutouts in the year’s first six games, No. 6 Wisconsin entered Saturday as a 30-point favorite over Illinois.

The Badgers had won their first six games by an average of 37.7 points and hadn’t trailed all season until James McCourt hit a 39-yard field goal with time expiring to give the Fighting Illini a 24-23 upset win.

The kick simultaneously booted Jonathan Taylor out of the Heisman Race, stamped out any chance the Badgers had at making the College Football Playoff, and killed all excitement for this weekend’s Big Ten battle between Wisconsin and Ohio State.

It was the second-biggest upset in terms of point spread in a Big Ten game in the past 40 years, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

OREGON’S BACK IN CONTENTION

Left for dead after blowing a 21-6 lead to Auburn in the season opener, the Ducks have flown under the radar while stringing together six-straight victories.

After throwing four more touchdowns in a 35-31 win against No. 23 Washington in Week 8, prized-NFL Draft-prospect Justin Herbert now has 21 touchdowns and only one interception on the season.

Ranked at No. 11 and available at +3300, the Ducks only have one more matchup against a ranked opponent on their schedule (No. 24 Arizona State). If one of Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State and Oklahoma should happen to get upset in the season’s final month, Oregon could have a pathway to the College Football Playoff.

Are NFL Players Safer Without Hip Drop Tackle?

Last offseason, the NFL decided to ban the hip drop tackle. For those unaware, a hip drop tackle occurs when a tackler wraps up a ball carrier with both hands or arms then swivels his hips and unweights himself (leaves his feet) to complete the tackle. The result of the tackle typically leaves the tackler […] The post Are NFL Players Safer Without Hip Drop Tackle? appeared first on Sportsbook Advisor . from Sportsbook Advisor https://ift.tt/m09iAka via IFTTT
