Seahawks, Rams Clash on Thursday Night NFL Odds

The Seattle Seahawks will be looking to snap a three-game straight-up losing streak against Los Angeles when they host the Rams in a Week 5 clash on Thursday Night Football as 2-point favorites on the NFL betting odds.

Seattle returns home after continuing a steady start to the 2019 NFL football season with a 27-10 win over the Arizona Cardinals as 5.5-point road chalk, improving the team’s record to 3-1 going into Thursday night’s game at CenturyLink Field.

With the win, the Seahawks have now opened their season on a 3-1 SU run for the first time since 2016. However, Seattle’s fast start has yet to earn the team respect on the NFL lines, where the Seahawks continue to lag at +350 on the odds to win the NFC West, well back of the Rams, who continue to lead the way as short -140 chalk.

The Seahawks have also produced steady offense so far through the first four weeks of the season. With Sunday’s win, Seattle has now scored at least 27 points in each of its past three outings, and ranks as a respectable ninth in the NFL in scoring with 25.8 points per game.

However, the Seahawks defense has struggled at times, allowing 26 or more points in two of the past three outings, including a disappointing 33-27 loss to the visiting New Orleans Saints in Week 3. Those big point totals have contributed to mixed results for bettors. Seattle has gone 2-2 against the spread so far this season, and has failed to cover in consecutive outings during a 4-4 ATS run that dates back to Week 15 of last season, including a current 0-3 ATS run on home turf.

The Seahawks have also turned in mixed results in recent contests when pegged as home chalk by three or fewer points. Seattle has mustered a middling 6-5 SU record in its past 11 games when favored by no more than a field goal, including a crushing 42-17 loss to the Rams in December 2017, and has gone 5-5-1 ATS in those contests.

Not surprisingly the Seahawks’ fast start has yet to lift their fortunes on the Super Bowl odds, where they remain stalled in the middle of the pack as a +2800 bet.

Rams Coming Off Loss as Heavy NFL Betting Chalk

While the Seahawks seek greater consistency on home turf, the Rams travel up the coast looking for answers after falling 55-40 to the visiting Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday afternoon. The loss as 9-point home favorites snapped the Rams’ three-game SU win streak to start the season, and also marked the second-highest point total that the team has allowed in its 83-year history.

The Rams defense struggled all day, allowing Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston to connect on four touchdown passes while surrendering 473 total yards. On the other side of the ball, pivot Jared Goff threw for 517 yards and two scores, but also threw three interceptions and coughed up a fumble late in the game which former Ram Ndamukong Suh returned for a touchdown to seal the win.

Despite the team’s dismal performance, Los Angeles continues to lead the way on the NFC championship odds as +500 chalk, and remains fourth in Super Bowl betting at +1200. The Rams have also regularly dominated the Seahawks, posting wins in six of eight meetings, including a 3-1 SU record in four trips to Seattle, and have outscored the Seahawks by an 111-69 overall margin in three straight victories.

However, the Rams have enjoyed little success on the NFL odds when facing Seattle, going 1-4 ATS in their past five meetings on the NFL spread. Los Angeles also owns a shaky 2-4 SU record in six previous appearances on Thursday Night Football, and is 2-5 SU in its past seven as a road underdog by three of fewer points, going 2-4-1 ATS.

*Odds as of October 3rd, 2019
