Super Bowl Odds Update After Week 5: Are the Patriots Pretenders?

  • BetOnline has updated Super Bowl 54 odds for all 32 NFL teams ahead of Week 6
  • The Patriots (+300) are big favorites after the Chiefs (+700) stumbled in Indianapolis
  • The Cowboys and Seahawks both have 20-1 title odds despite drastically different results in Week 5

The NFL was built on parity, but following Week 5, there are now four winless franchises and another quartet of one-win squads.

With pathetic outfits like the Dolphins, Bengals, and Redskins propping up inflated records around the league, it’s more important than ever to examine a team’s early-season schedule before placing your bets.

Let’s look at the latest Super Bowl 54 odds at BetOnline and call out some pretenders who have benefited from soft starts to the season.

DALLAS COWBOYS

No team’s stock has fallen as much as the Cowboys’ in the past two weeks. After wins over the Giants, Dolphins, and Redskins, people were handing Dak Prescott the MVP and giving new offensive coordinator Kellen Moore his choice of offseason head-coaching jobs.

However, following two dispiriting losses to the Saints and Packers, talk radio now positions Dak as a greedy bum who can’t win big games (10-14 career record against winning teams) and who should take whatever contract Jerry Jones is nice enough to give him.

The truth behind those two narratives probably lies somewhere in the middle, but 20-1 is actually decent value for a squad with a young, athletic defense and a dominant offensive line (when healthy).

The injury to All Pro left tackle Tyron Smith shouldn’t be longterm, and Dallas should rebound when he and right tackle La’el Collins return (potentially as early as Week 6).

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS

The six-time Super Bowl champs don’t exactly fit the pretender mold, but at 3-1, the Patriots are now prohibitive favorites to repeat as champions despite no one having any idea how good they really are.

Aside from defeating a concussed Josh Allen in a tight Week 4 win in Buffalo (16-8), New England’s four victories have come against the Steelers, Dolphins, Jets, and Redskins (combined record: 1-16).

And with both New York teams on the schedule over the next two weeks, 42-year-old Tom Brady won’t face meaningful competition until late October.

That’s when the Pats kick off a stressful six-game stretch against the Browns, Ravens, Eagles, Cowboys, Texans and Chiefs which will have Robert Kraft searching for tension relief at seedy Florida massage parlors.

SEATTLE SEAHAWKS

Some combination of Russell Wilson’s choir-boy act and the cutesy relationship stuff he posts to social media annoys football fans who aren’t rich, famous or dating Ciara, so we constantly underrate him and forget he’s absolutely one of the best at his craft.

But, with MVP buzz deservedly building for Wilson after his four-touchdown performance against the Rams last Thursday, it’s important to take a closer look at the Seahawks 4-1 record before betting on a return to glory for the 2014 Super Bowl champs.

Aside from their 30-29 win over Sean McVay’s crew, Seattle has beaten Cincinnati, Pittsburgh (mostly with Mason Rudolph), and Arizona, teams with a 2-12-1 combined record.

Worse yet, their offensive coordinator is Brian Schottenheimer and their defense is nothing like the old Legion of Boom, rating 17th in Defensive DVOA at Football Outsiders.

Tread carefully if betting on the Seahawks.

One month into the college football season and things don’t really look how we expected.
