Making an unexpected appearance on Wild Card Weekend, Tom Brady and the New England Patriots are listed as the 4.5-point favorites against the Tennessee Titans for Saturday night.
New England lost out on a first-round bye with a 27-24 upset defeat at the hands of the Miami Dolphins in Week 17, pushing them into this Wild Card matchup with the Titans. The Patriots were heavy 17-point betting favorites on the NFL odds against the Dolphins, with Brady throwing for 221 yards with two touchdowns and an interception in the contest.
Overall the Patriots have been middling heading into the postseason, with just two wins in their last five games and four victories over their past eight contests. Totals bettors have watched the OVER pay out in four of the team’s last five games heading into the playoffs.
The Titans, meanwhile, put an end to a two-game losing streak in Week 17 with a 35-14 win at the Houston Texans as 10-point betting favorites, punching their ticket to the playoffs. Tennessee had won four straight games to get back into postseason contention before dropping consecutive games at home to the Texans and the Saints in Weeks 15 and 16.
And that puts Tennessee into this tough matchup at New England. The Titans are just 2-8 straight up and 3-7 against the spread on the NFL betting odds in their last 10 games against the Patriots, but they did beat them 34-10 as 6.5-point home underdogs on the NFL lines when the teams last met in November 2018. That was a close UNDER result on the totals.
Kickoff for Titans at Patriots at Gillette Stadium on Saturday night is set for 8:15pm ET.
Texans Field-Goal Favorites Hosting Bills on Saturday
The early Wild Card matchup on Saturday is also an AFC affair, as the Texans play host to the Buffalo Bills as 3-point favorites on the NFL betting lines. The Week 17 game against the Titans was meaningless for the Texans, and they sat out key players including quarterback Deshaun Watson in the defeat. A.J. McCarron threw for 225 yards and an interception.
The Texans went 4-1 in their last five games prior to Week 17, although they’ve only managed to cover the NFL spread twice in their past seven outings heading into the postseason. So while Houston won the AFC South at 10-6 on the season, they were only 7-8-1 ATS this year.
The Bills had an identical 10-6 overall record this past season, finishing two games behind the Patriots in the AFC East standings, but paid off for bettors at 9-6-1 ATS. Buffalo also had nothing to play for in Week 17, with backups leading the team to a 13-6 loss at home against the New York Jets as 1-point underdogs. Buffalo is just 1-3 both SU and ATS in its last four games heading into the playoffs, with the UNDER paying out in five of its last six contests.
Houston has the slight edge at 5-4 both SU and ATS in its past nine games against Buffalo, with the Texans topping the Bills 20-13 but failing to cover the 10-point spread at home when the teams last met back in October 2018. That was the fourth UNDER result in the past five games between the teams, and OVER has only paid out three times in their nine meetings.
Kickoff for Bills at Texans at NRG Stadium on Saturday afternoon is set for 4:35pm ET.
