The Dallas Mavericks will be looking for a fifth straight victory and a fourth payout on the NBA odds in their past five games when they host the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday night.
Dallas is coming off a decisive 120-112 win over the visiting Portland Trail Blazers as 7.5-point home chalk on Friday, and remains in the thick of the playoff race in the middle of the Western Conference standings going into Tuesday night’s matchup at the American Airlines Center.
The Mavericks offense has led the way during the team’s recent resurgence, averaging 120 points per game over their four recent straight-up victories. After failing to top 33 wins in each of the past three NBA seasons, the Mavericks now enjoy a 27-15 record, which puts the team on pace to record their best regular season since their 2010/11 championship campaign.
Pegged as a lengthy +6600 bet on the NBA championship odds on opening night, the Mavericks have made substantial gains during their fast start, entering the week as a vastly improved +1800 wager. The emergence of Luka Doncic as an elite talent in just his second NBA season has been key to the Mavericks’ return to respectability.
The 20-year-old ranks among the leaders in the NBA in scoring with 28.9 points per game, and has recorded triple-doubles on 12 occasions through his first 38 appearances of the season. Doncic has also impressed against the Clippers, averaging just under 25 points per game over four previous meetings, including a triple-double in the Mavericks’ last road date with Los Angeles in February of last year.
However, Doncic’s heroics have not been enough for Dallas to overcome their recent stretch of futility against the Clippers. The Mavericks saw a four-game SU home win streak against the Clippers get snapped with a lopsided 114-99 loss as 1.5-point underdogs on November 26, and they have now lost SU in six of nine overall meetings with Los Angeles.
And despite their recent surge, the Mavericks have been far from dominant in recent outings on home hardwood, going 5-6 SU in their past 11, and a dismal 3-7-1 against the spread on the NBA lines during that stretch. Kristaps Porzingis’ continued struggle with injuries has also been a concern. The big man has been sidelined for the past 10 games with a knee injury, and remains questionable to make his return against the Clippers despite recent optimism.
George Injuries Have Been Concern for Clippers
Injuries are also a concern for the Clippers as they travel to Dallas looking to extend their current SU win streak to four games. Star forward Paul George missed his fifth straight game with a hamstring injury as Los Angeles opened its current six-game road trip with a narrow 133-130 win in New Orleans as 5.5-point chalk on Saturday. George has appeared in just 26 games in his first season with the Clippers, and remains questionable for Tuesday night.
However, the Los Angeles offense has done fine without George of late, averaging 127.7 points per game during their three-game tear. Despite those solid offensive numbers, the Clippers have been a shaky bet against the NBA spread, going 2-5 ATS in their past seven games, and have also produced uneven results in totals betting, with the OVER/UNDER going 2-2-1 in their past five, ending a 9-3 run for the OVER.
The team has also struggled to make up ground lost during a middling 3-4 SU run over Christmas. The Clippers have found themselves in a tight three-way battle with Denver and Utah for second place in the Western Conference since halting their mini-swoon, but have maintained their resilience on the NBA championship odds, where they remain entrenched among the favorites as a short +350 wager.
