McGregor Strong Favorite on UFC 246 Betting Lines

Conor McGregor will be making his first appearance in the octagon in 15 months when he takes on welterweight Donald Cerrone on Saturday in the main event of UFC 246 as a heavy -340 favorite on the UFC betting odds.

McGregor has been idle since suffering a fourth-round loss in a controversial clash with Khabib Nurmagomedov in a bid to reclaim the UFC lightweight championship at UFC 229 that leaves him sporting a 21-4 professional MMA record going into Saturday night’s bout at T-Mobile Arena.

McGregor stormed onto the UFC scene in April 2013, claiming victory in each of his first seven fights while earning performance bonuses on six occasions. That run culminated with an historic victory over Jose Aldo just 13 seconds into their battle for the UFC featherweight championship at UFC 194, with the verbose Irishman paying out as a slender -105 underdog.

The 31-year-old has entered the octagon on just four occasions in the four years since that victory over Aldo. McGregor made his welterweight debut with a pair of epic matchups with Nate Diaz, suffering a second-round submission loss at UFC 196 as a heavy -400 favorite, before rebounding to claim a majority decision victory and a Fight of the Night bonus at UFC 202 as a diminished -150 bet.

McGregor later claimed the UFC lightweight title with a second-round TKO win over Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 to pay out as -170 chalk, but was subsequently stripped of the title due to inactivity.

Cerrone makes his return to welterweight for Saturday night’s matchup pegged as a lengthy +260 underdog on the UFC 246 odds. Cerrone has struggled in a pair of recent defeats; he followed up a second-round TKO loss in a lightweight clash with Tony Ferguson at UFC 238 with a stunning first-round TKO defeat at the hands of Justin Gaethje at UFC Fight Night 158 while sporting +145 odds.

Overall, Cerrone has earned the win in just four of his past 10 overall octagon appearances, dumping his pro MMA record to 36-13. And while the 36-year-old native of Denver, Colorado managed to finish opponents in each of his first four fights as a welterweight, he has produced mixed results in subsequent clashes at 170 pounds, recording a pair of opening-round finishes but falling to defeat in four of his past six.

Holm Favored Over Pennington on UFC 246 Odds

Elsewhere on the UFC 246 odds, Holly Holm looks to rebound from her recent failed bid for the UFC women’s bantamweight title as she takes on fellow American Raquel Pennington as a -145 favorite.

Holm has struggled to produce winning results since taking the UFC world by storm with a stunning second-round victory over Ronda Rousey at UFC 193 as a massive +525 underdog that earned her the UFC women’s bantamweight crown. Holm has fallen to defeat in five of seven octagon appearances since, and was dominated in a first-round TKO loss to current UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes last time out at UFC 239.

Listed as a +115 wager on Saturday night, Pennington has also struggled of late. The Colorado Springs native is coming off a three-round split decision win over Irene Aldana at UFC on ESPN 4, ending a two-fight losing skid that included a fifth-round TKO loss to Nunes at UFC 224 as a +450 underdog. However, the 31-year-old suffered a split-decision loss to Holm as a +375 wager when the two fighters met five years ago at UFC 184.

As well, Maurice Greene battles Aleksei Oleinik as -140 chalk in a clash of heavyweights, and Cláudia Gadelha edges out Alexa Grasso as a narrow -120 favorite in their women’s strawweight battle, while Anthony “Showtime” Pettis returns to the UFC lightweight division to face Carlos Diego Ferreira as a +200 underdog.
