The Green Bay Packers will be looking to snap a two-game losing streak on Conference Championship Weekend when they visit the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday for this season’s NFC Championship Game as 7.5-point underdogs on the NFL betting odds.
After missing the playoffs in each of the past two seasons Green Bay has enjoyed an impressive resurgence, marching to the top of the NFC North standings with a 13-3 record including straight-up wins in six straight contests ahead of Sunday’s game at Levi’s Stadium.
The Packers outlasted the Seattle Seahawks to claim a 28-23 victory in last weekend’s NFC Divisional Round action, narrowly paying out as 4.5-point favorites in a Sunday night clash on the frozen tundra at Lambeau Field. Green Bay has now posted against the spread wins in four of its past six outings, but has struggled at times to reward bettors in recent road contests.
Green Bay has compiled a 4-2 SU record over its past six road dates, but failed to cover in three of those contests, most notably a crushing 37-8 loss in San Francisco as 3-point underdogs in Week 12 that marked the team’s most lopsided road defeat in four years. This season’s defeat also extended the Packers’ recent shaky track record against the 49ers that has seen them lose outright in five of their last seven meetings. That run includes a pair of SU defeats in playoff action, and features a dismal 1-5-1 ATS record.
The Packers have tightened up their defense dramatically since their recent defeat at Levi’s Stadium, allowing just 15.7 points per game during their current 6-0 SU run. While that has contributed to a steady 4-1 run for the UNDER in totals betting on the NFL odds, they have struggled at times to run up the score, scoring 23 or fewer points in four of their past five contests.
The duo of quarterback Aaron Rodgers and receiver Davante Adams took enormous strides forward in their bid to spark the Packers offense in last weekend’s win over Seattle. Rodgers connected on eight passes to Adams, who racked up 160 yards and two touchdowns in the win. That performance has helped propel Rodgers to a +750 wager on the odds to be named this year’s Super Bowl MVP, while Adams leads the way as a +325 favorite to lead all players in receiving yards on Conference Championship Weekend.
Niners Coming Off a Strong Defensive Performance
However, Rodgers and the Packers are likely to have their hands full against the Niners, who are coming off an impressive defensive performance in last weekend’s 27-10 rout of the Minnesota Vikings. The 49ers held Minnesota to just 147 total yards and just three first downs in the second half as they claimed their first-ever playoff victory at Levi’s Stadium.
The San Francisco rush defense was particularly impressive. Vikings running back Dalvin Cook was limited to just 18 rushing yards after being pegged as a +550 second favorite to lead all rushers in yardage during the Divisional Round, while Minnesota tallied just 21 yards on the ground on 10 total carries.
The 49ers have also regularly demonstrated their ability to run up the score this season, scoring 34 or more points in four of their past eight contests. However, the team produced some mixed results on home turf during the second half of the season, going 1-3-1 ATS during a five-game stretch that featured outright losses to Seattle and Atlanta, both while pegged as favorites.
But with Jimmy Garoppolo overcoming the challenge of earning a win in his first playoff start as a starting quarterback, and the defense back at full health for the first time since the first half of the season, the 49ers are now set as +165 second favorites on the Super Bowl odds.
