The Dallas Cowboys will be aiming to end a two-game straight-up losing streak and maintain their tenuous perch atop the NFC East standings when they take on the Chicago Bears this week on Thursday Night Football as 3-point road favorites on the NFL betting odds.
Dallas is coming off a disappointing 26-15 loss to the visiting Buffalo Bills on Thanksgiving Day to fall to 6-6 SU on the season, but still maintains a narrow one-game lead over the Philadelphia Eagles in the divisional standings going into Thursday night’s matchup at Soldier Field.
The Cowboys have struggled to get things going offensively during their current two-game SU slide. In addition to failing to find the end zone in a rain-soaked 13-9 loss to the New England Patriots two weeks ago, the Cowboys struggled with the ball after scoring on their opening drive of their loss to Buffalo as 6.5-point favorites on the NFL lines. However, those defeats have not dampened the team’s position on the NFL betting futures, where they remain a solid -180 favorite to finish atop the NFC East standings.
Overall, the Cowboys are 3-6 SU in nine outings since opening the campaign on a 3-0 SU run, including a 2-3 SU mark on the road. However, those two recent road victories came by decisive margins. Dallas averaged 36 points per game while posting recent road wins over the New York Giants and Detroit Lions, covering the NFL spread while pegged as a substantial favorite in each of those contests.
And despite their struggles against Buffalo last Thursday, the Cowboys have been steady performers when appearing on Thursday Night Football, posting outright victories in each of their past five appearances, and limiting opponents to just 13 points per game over their past three appearances.
The Cowboys have also held the upper hand in recent meetings with Chicago, posting decisive victories in their past two meetings including a 41-28 victory as 3.5-point road chalk in their last visit to the Windy City back in 2014.
Bears Looking to Extend Modest Winning Streak
However, a trip to Chicago may be coming at a bad time for the Cowboys, as the Bears aim to extend their current SU win streak to three games. The Bears overcame a slow start to outlast the Lions in a 24-20 win in Week 13 in a narrow ATS loss as 5.5-point favorites in NFL betting.
The Bears also needed a second-half rally to get past the New York Giants in Week 12, and have covered just once during their current 3-1 SU run. Despite failing to reward bettors on the NFL odds, though, Chicago has been solid defensively, limiting opponents to just 16 points per game over its past four outings.
Those defensive numbers look even better on home turf, where the Bears have given up more than 17 points in just one of their six dates at Soldier Field during this NFL football season. The Chicago defense has also made life miserable for opposing rushers when playing at home this season, surrendering just four total scoring runs, and none in their two recent home victories.
Like Dallas, the challenge for the Bears is to generate offense. With quarterback Mitchell Trubisky struggling to regain the form that enabled him to lead the team to the top of the NFC North last season, the Bears have averaged just 15 points per game over their past six outings.
Bears fans are hoping that Trubisky is moving in the right direction after he threw three scoring passes in last week’s win in Detroit, marking the second time this season he has connected on three touchdown passes against the Lions. However, with neither of these teams lighting up the scoreboard with consistency, the total in Thursday night’s contest is pegged at just 42.5 points.
