  • New Orleans and Pittsburgh suffered devastating injuries to Drew Brees and Ben Roethlisberger

In a sport where quarterback play is everything, NFL teams are only ever one injury away from being irrelevant. After an especially cruel Week 2 downed two of the league’s elder statesmen at the position, this season’s Super Bowl odds have seen their first major shakeup.

With the medical reports still rolling in, let’s look at BetOnline to see how things have changed.

SAINTS & STEELERS SUPER BOWL ODDS PLUMMET

Drew Brees’ thumb injury caused New Orleans’ Super Bowl odds to slip from 8/1 to 20/1. Whether you take the discounted price depends on if you believe they can survive six weeks with Teddy Bridgewater behind center.

Over the next month-and-a-half, the Saints will play: at Seahawks, Cowboys, Bucs, at Jags, at Bears, Cardinals. You can probably find at least three wins in there given the overall strength of their defense and Sean Payton’s ability to scheme big plays and get Teddy prepared.

The NFC South also hasn’t been too impressive as a whole, so 9-7 or 10-6 might be good enough to win the division. It’s a risky bet, but it could pay off in a big way if Brees returns after the team’s Week 9 bye week with the Saints at 4-4.

It’s a different story in Pittsburgh where Ben Roethlisberger will undergo elbow surgery and miss the rest of the season. (If you listen closely enough, you can almost hear crazy Antonio Brown chuckling in the distance).

While Big Ben’s placement Mason Rudolph performed admirably in relief (12-of-19 for 112 yards with 2 TDs), the Steelers are obviously no longer in the Super Bowl discussion.

COWBOYS & RAVENS ON THE RISE

Dak Prescott is going to be one rich man. In the midst of a contract negotiation, the 26-year-old threw three more touchdowns against the Redskins on Sunday and is quickly emerging as a MVP candidate in Kellen Moore’s new-look attack.

The Cowboys have already scored nine offensive touchdowns through two weeks; it took them until Week 6 to do that last season.

Lamar Jackson has been every bit as impressive in Baltimore. Following up his five-touchdown performance against Miami in Week 1, the former Heisman Trophy winner passed for 272 yards and two scores versus Arizona, adding 120 yards with his legs.

After facing two of the worst defenses in the NFL, the question is whether the Ravens actually have one the scariest offenses in the league or if it’s all a mirage.

All I know is that some network TV executive needs to be fired for not having Baltimore’s Week 3 game against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs in primetime.
