The Dallas Cowboys will be looking to open their season on a 4-0 straight-up run for the first time since 2007 when they visit the New Orleans Saints this weekend on Sunday Night Football as 3-point favorites on the NFL betting odds.
Dallas is coming off a lopsided 31-6 win over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday to remain perfect this season, both SU and against the spread, and now rides a five-game SU win streak in regular-season action into Sunday night’s game at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
The Cowboys have regularly run up the score during their hot start, averaging 32.33 points per game over their first three outings. Overall, Dallas has won outright in 11 of 13 contests, while picking up ATS wins on the NFL spread on nine occasions. The Cowboys’ high-scoring ways have also generated a steady run for the OVER, which has gone 5-1 over their past six games in totals betting.
But while the Cowboys have been dominant in the early going of the current NFL football season, they have produced uneven results on the road since last season, going 4-6 SU in their past 10 dates away from AT&T Stadium.
That trend extends to the team’s appearances on Sunday Night Football, with Dallas going 4-11 SU in 15 Sunday road games in prime time since 2010. However, the Cowboys have proven reliable of late on Sunday Night Football, posting wins in seven of their past 10 overall, capped by a 27-20 win in Philadelphia as 7.5-point underdogs in their last appearance in Week 10 of last season.
Saints Coming off a Victory as a Road Underdog
The Saints return home on a high after picking up an impressive 33-27 win in Seattle last weekend while listed as 5-point underdogs on the NFL odds. The victory proved to be an important one for the Saints, who are without veteran quarterback Drew Brees. The future Hall of Fame quarterback needed surgery to repair a thumb injury that will keep him out of the lineup for an extended period for the first time since arriving in the Big Easy in 2006.
The 40-year-old is expected to join the Saints on the sideline for Sunday night’s contest, cheering on Teddy Bridgewater, who has stepped in to take over the New Orleans offense in Brees’ absence.
Bridgewater turned in a solid performance against the Seahawks last weekend in just his second start since Week 17 of the 2015 NFL season, connecting on 19 of 27 passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns, and will be facing the Cowboys for the first time in his career in Sunday’s contest.
However, the star of the Saints’ win in Seattle was clearly running back Alvin Kamara. The 2017 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year amassed 161 total yards, and tallied both a touchdown reception and a scoring run, and has been rewarded on the odds to be named NFL MVP this season, climbing to an attractive +2000 on those NFL lines. But with Brees out of action, the Saints face a huge challenge to overcome some recent uneven play on home turf that has left them with a middling 2-2 SU record in their past four such outings.
New Orleans has also surrendered almost 26 points per game over their past five home contests, powering a 5-0 run for the OVER on the NFL betting totals. However, the Saints have won outright in four of six as a home underdog, and are 4-1 SU and ATS in their past five games when pegged as home underdogs of fewer than three points.
