OKLAHOMA SOONERS

Oklahoma’s odds of winning the national championship lowered from 10/1 to 9/1 after Jalen Hurts’ mega-impressive debut in Lincoln Riley’s offense.

The Alabama transfer accounted for six touchdowns and more than 500 yards of total offense in Oklahoma’s 49-31 win over Houston, proving that he’s plenty capable of becoming the third-straight Sooners quarterback to win the Heisman Trophy and be drafted No. 1 overall.

Before Sunday night, Hurts threw for more than 300 yards in a game just once in his college career. However, now under the tutelage of a bona fide offensive genius, the 21-year-old recorded 332 passing yards and 176 yards rushing with three TDs in the air and three on the ground, becoming only the second FBS player in the past 20 years to accomplish that feat.

AUBURN TIGERS AND OREGON DUCKS

Despite going 13-of-31 and throwing two interceptions, Auburn’s true-freshman QB Bo Nix was able to pull off a last-second comeback over Oregon in Week 1.

If you remember, the Tigers also defeated eventual Pac-12 champion Washington in the first week of the 2018 season, shaping how the conference was perceived all season.

Auburn’s dramatic victory cut their championship odds in half from +5000 to +2500, while doubling the Ducks’ odds from +3300 to +6600.

Justin Herbert’s Heisman hopes are also dead in the water after the senior threw for just 242 yards and a TD in the opening-game loss.

OTHER NATIONAL TITLE HOPEFULS

Junior quarterback Sam Ehlinger lived up to the Texas-sized offseason hype, throwing for 276 yards and four scores in the Longhorns’ 45-14 win over Louisiana Tech. Of course, the real test will come in Week 2 versus LSU.

The Tigers’ secondary is regarded as the best in the country, and their senior QB (Joe Burrow) didn’t look too bad in Week 1 either, tossing five TDs in a 55-3 massacre over Georgia Southern.

Moving to the Big Ten, Ohio State and Michigan both got off to strong starts. Dual-threat star Justin Fields accounted for 295 total yards and four TDs in the Buckeyes’ 45-21 win over Florida Atlantic.

Meanwhile, the Wolverines’ new-look offense put up 40 points against Middle Tennessee. Quarterback Shea Patterson looked like a perfect fit in the no-huddle spread attack, finding the end zone three times in a relatively easy victory.
