- BetOnline has updated Week 1 odds as the NFL’s 100th season gets underway
- The Colts will cover the 7-point spread against a beat-up Chargers club
- The Broncos and Ravens won’t have trouble covering in their season openers
When placing bets in Week 1 of the NFL season, there are few important things to keep in mind.
First, since wise guys have been placing bets on the same slate of games since the spring, the lines are stale and you might not find as much value as you will in Weeks 2 through 17, when the betting public is overreacting to the previous week’s results.
Secondly, everything you know about a particular team is either from what you saw last year or what you’ve read. You haven’t actually watched meaningful football this season yet, so don’t fall victim to the hype.
With that in mind, let’s examine the odds at BetOnline and pick three Week 1 winners against the spread.

COLTS (+7.0) VS CHARGERS
Indianapolis’ Super Bowl odds plummeted after Andrew Luck’s surprise retirement, but the Chargers have also had their fair share of bad news. Star safety Derwin James is out until at least Week 9 with a foot injury, and left tackle Russell Okung is expected to miss the first six games of the season.
While Philip Rivers is a master at getting the ball out at lightning speed, the Colts’ DPOY candidate Darius Leonard should be able to gobble up short and intermediate passes.

On the other side of the ball, the hog mollies on the Colts’ O-Line should be able to keep Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram at bay, giving the newly-extended Jacoby Brissett the time he needs to find his receivers.
Keep in mind that Anthony Lynn has also dropped his first two season openers as Chargers coach, including a 24-21 loss to a Broncos squad that finished the year 5-11
BRONCOS (-1.0) VS RAIDERS
While we have more visibility into the inner workings of the Raiders than the league’s other 31 teams thanks to HBO’s Hard Knocks, the Jon Gruden footage doesn’t exactly inspire confidence.
Rather than wager on the same coach that went 4-12 in Oakland last season after signing a 10-year, $100M contract, bet on the coach that oversaw the Bears’ league-best defense in 2018 (Vic Fangio).

With Von Miller and Bradley Chubb at his disposal, 61-year-old Fangio will win his first-ever game as an NFL head coach.
RAVENS (-7.0) VS DOLPHINS
Considering the Dolphins are in full Fish Tank mode after trading away left tackle Laremy Tunsil and wide receiver Kenny Stills, it’s actually worrisome that this spread isn’t even higher.
If the “revolutionary” run-first attack that OC Greg Roman built for Lamar Jackson doesn’t put up points on Miami, then it’s safe to say it’s not going to work at all.
“I’m going with my guy Lamar Jackson rushing for over a thousand.” @nateburleson predicts Lamar Jackson will break Michael Vick’s rushing record.

Similarly, the new-look Raven defense led by Earl Thomas better pick off Harvard-scholar Ryan Fitzpatrick at least a few times or Baltimore could be in real trouble against Big Ben and Baker Mayfield in the AFC North.
