Super Bowl 55 Odds Post Draft Update: Chiefs and Ravens Favored

  • The Chiefs (+650) and Ravens (+700) both juiced up their running games in the 2020 NFL Draft
  • The Packers’ Super Bowl odds dropped from +1800 to +3300 after a series of strange picks
  • Tampa Bay’s odds (+1200) are now shorter than the back-to-back-to-back NFC South champion Saints (+1400)

While the football nerds on Twitter would contend “running backs don’t matter,” the two favorites to win next year’s Super Bowl, the Chiefs (+650) and Ravens (+700), clearly disagree.

Kansas City used the last pick of the first round to select pass-catching dynamo Clyde Edwards-Helaire from LSU, sending fantasy football scribes into an immediate frenzy. Then, early on Day 2, Baltimore added firepower to the NFL’s top ground attack, grabbing Ohio State thumper J.K. Dobbins to pair with Mark Ingram and Lamar Jackson.

With the NFL’s virtual draft in the books and sports fans now staring into an empty abyss, let’s examine the updated odds to hoist the Lombardi Trophy next February.

TOP NFC CONTENDERS

The 49ers (+1200) used the first of their two first-round picks on a replacement for DeForest Buckner on the interior, grabbing DT Javon Kinlaw at #14. Then they added another pass-catching weapon for Jimmy G in freak-athlete Brandon Aiyuk at #25. But one could argue they saved their best move for Day 3.

For the cheap price of a 5th-round pick and a 3rd in 2021, San Francisco acquired Trent Williams from the Redskins, immediately filling the void left by Joe Staley’s retirement with another left tackle with a Hall of Fame-worthy resume.

Tampa Bay‘s rise to +1200 from +6600 back in February of course has more to do with the arrival of the greatest quarterback and tight end of all time than what occurred during the draft, but selecting Iowa offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs at No. 13 was just what the doctor ordered for a team with an immobile 43-year-old behind center.

It’s hard to justify the Buccaneers having shorter Super Bowl odds than the perennially snake-bitten Saints (+1400), who used the draft to beef up their O-Line (Cesar Ruiz) and add talent at linebacker (Zack Baun).

After signing Jameis Winston on Sunday, we’re only one Drew Brees injury away from the former No. 1-overall pick getting a chance to fulfill his revenge fantasy against Bruce Arians and the Bucs.

POST-DRAFT LINE MOVEMENT

While we won’t know who really won the 2020 NFL Draft for months or even years, Jerry Jones and the Cowboys (+2000) get to wear the crown for now. Halfway through a boring first round where every pick went chalk, Dallas somehow had Oklahoma’s CeeDee Lamb fall into their laps at No. 17.

On paper at least, adding a guy that many draftniks considered to be the best wide receiver in a loaded class to an offense already featuring Dak Prescott, Zeke Elliott, Amari Cooper, and Michael Gallup seems absurd and unfair. Since even Mike McCarthy shouldn’t be able to screw this one up, the Cowboys look like the strongest value on the board.

The odds of their NFC East division rivals in Philadelphia dropped from +1800 to +2500 following a much-ridiculed draft, but adding speed on the outside (Jalen Reagor) and backing up the always-injured Carson Wentz with Jalen Hurts seems wise.

The Packers also drew the ire of the internet after moving up to draft quarterback Jordan Love in round one. Apparently, oddsmakers don’t agree with the “Aaron Rodgers will be extra motivated this year” narrative, lengthening Green Bay’s Super Bowl odds from +1800 to +3300.

One month into the college football season and things don’t really look how we expected.
