While Dave Gettleman was sadly unable to “smell or feel” this year’s crop of prospects, the 2020 NFL Draft will indeed go on as scheduled on April 23-25, providing sports fans with another welcome respite from COVID-19.

With the virtual festivities kicking off on Thursday night, let’s look at the NFC playoff odds to uncover potential values on who might make and miss the postseason. However, before placing any bets, don’t forget about the NFL’s new playoff format, which adds a seventh team from each conference.

PACKERS PLUNGE (+210 TO MISS)

In 2019, Green Bay completed the least impressive 13-3 season in football history before being blown out by the 49ers (for the second time in the season) in the NFC title game.

According to the great Warren Sharp, the Packers only went 2-2 when facing clubs with winning records and starting quarterbacks last year. They are now projected to play the league’s eighth-toughest slate.

While Cheeseheads have to feel confident about Aaron Rodgers winning a division title over competition that includes questionable QBs (Kirk Cousins, Mitch Trubisky/Nick Foles) and a pathetic head coach (Matt Patricia), their 36-year-old signal caller has been in decline for years.

Heading into the second season of the Matt LaFleur era, enough can go wrong to justify a juicy +210 bet on Green Bay missing the postseason for the third time in four years.

PHILLY NOT SO SPECIAL (+170 TO MISS)

After somehow failing to acquire DeAndre Hopkins at Bill O’Brien’s rock-bottom prices, the Eagles are still desperate for weapons with only 33-year-old DeSean Jackson, 30-year-old Alshon Jeffery and 2019 draft bust J.J. Arcega-Whiteside on the outside.

All is not lost, however, with Philadelphia set to pick at No. 21, 53 and 103 in what many are calling the deepest wide receiver class in NFL history.

If GM Howie Roseman can add two talented pass catchers for Carson Wentz, we’re more than willing to reconsider, but at the moment, it’s hard to forget just how ugly their injury-depleted offense looked at times last season.

RAMS WORTH THE RISK? (+150 TO MAKE)

As the hype continues to build for Kyler Murray and the division-rival Cardinals (+210), it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Los Angeles’ playoff odds fall to +200 or +250 this summer. After all, the franchise is now paying $42 million in dead money to have running back Todd Gurley and receiver Brandin Cooks play for other teams.

On the other hand, the Rams’ 9-7 record in 2019 would have put them in the postseason under the new playoff format and they still have one of the league’s top offensive minds. Even with Jared Goff under center, no one should be worried about Sean McVay generating enough points.

The bigger question is on defense after LA replaced 72-year-old DC Wade Phillips with 37-year-old Brandon Staley, who coached linebackers under Vic Fangio the past three seasons after spending a decade at lower-tier colleges.

While Staley’s credentials don’t jump off the page, it would probably be pretty hard to hoodwink an offensive wunderkind like McVay while interviewing for the defensive-coordinator position. Plus, he’ll be working with two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald and All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey.

We’re giving McVay the benefit of the doubt and placing the Rams back in the playoffs.
