Lakers Ride SU, ATS Run Into Thursday vs. Rockets

The Los Angeles Lakers have already won and covered the spread on the NBA betting odds once against the Houston Rockets so far this season. They’ll get a chance at a repeat performance on Thursday night when the teams square off at the Staples Center.

The Lakers will be betting favorites for Thursday night after they’d been listed as 3.5-point road underdogs on the NBA betting lines in their first meeting of the season with the Rockets back on January 18, pulling out a 124-115 victory in that OVER result on the NBA totals.

LeBron James led the way with 31 points and 12 assists for the Lakers in that January victory, while Kyle Kuzma was good for 23 points in the contest, and Danny Green and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope had 20 points apiece. Anthony Davis sat out that game for Los Angeles. Russell Westbrook and James Harden combined for 69 points in the losing cause for the Rockets that day, with Westbrook scoring a game-high 35 points and grabbing nine boards.

That was Los Angeles’ second straight straight-up and against-the-spread victory over Houston, but in the last 10 games between the Western Conference rivals the Lakers are just 3-7 SU and 6-4 ATS. The OVER has paid out on the NBA lines in four of the last five games between the two teams, and in seven of their last 10 meetings dating back to March 2017.

And the Lakers are also riding an overall two-game SU and ATS winning streak into Thursday night’s matchup, after they dispatched the Kings 129-113 in Sacramento as a 7-point favorite on Saturday night and followed up with a 129-102 victory at home against the San Antonio Spurs as a 10.5-point favorite on the NBA odds on Tuesday night. The Lakers had lost their previous two games both SU and ATS, going 2-5 ATS over their seven previous outings.

James led the way again for the Lakers against the Spurs, pouring in a team-high 36 points to go along with nine assists, with Kuzma and Davis adding 18 points apiece on the night.

Rockets Carry Winning Streak Into Thursday Night

The Rockets, meanwhile, have won three straight games heading into Thursday night, covering the NBA spread in their last two outings including a 125-110 home victory over the Charlotte Hornets on Tuesday night as heavy 13-point betting favorites. Westbrook sat out that game with a thumb injury, leaving Harden to carry the load with a 40-point performance.

Harden also picked up a dozen assists in that win for the Rockets, who had been in a 3-6 SU slump prior to their current three-game winning streak. Danuel House Jr. was good for 22 points on the night, with Ben McLemore filling in for Westbrook and managing 14 points. With Houston also playing on the road at Phoenix on Friday, Westbrook’s status is one to watch.

Houston’s recent stumbles and the strong performance from the two Los Angeles teams has the Rockets trailing at +700 on the latest odds to win the Western Conference title, with the Lakers the +145 betting favorite on those futures and the Clippers following behind them at +200. The Denver Nuggets and Utah Jazz are both set at +1000 on those Western odds.

The Rockets are also fourth at +1200 on the latest NBA championship odds, again behind both the Lakers (+225) and Clippers (+350) along with the Eastern Conference’s Milwaukee Bucks (+300). Houston remains the -200 favorite on the odds to win the Southwest Division.
