Churchhill Downs and Santa Anita

Prepare your racebook and notify your players; Churchill Downs and Santa Anita Park are opening for business.

Two of the most important racetracks in the United States have set dates to resume racing. Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby, and Santa Anita Park in Southern California will offer live racing later this month.

Santa Anita Park has targeted May 15 to continue their winter-spring meet.

Churchill Downs starts its 2020 meet on May 16.

Both should offer attractive betting opportunities to even the most casual players. Bookie agents should prepare their digital racebooks for Churchill and Santa Anita. The more information agents like you can provide players; the more horse racing action goes to your business.

Churchill Downs the first word in the thoroughbred industry

The Kentucky racetrack is an industry leader. Churchill Downs has turned the Kentucky Derby into the most famous horse race in the world. When it comes to U.S. horse racing, everything revolves around the Kentucky Derby.

After Churchill moved the date of the Derby from May 2 to September 5, every horse owner and trainer rearranged their racing schedules. Other tracks in the U.S. also changed the dates of their primary races.

That’s how much power Churchill has.

The Kentucky racetrack wanted an opening day of April 25th,  but the pandemic forced the Louisville-based facility to change dates.

Churchill will run races on Thursday through Sundays. A special Memorial Day race card is scheduled to happen on Monday, May 25.

Outside of the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks, the Twin Spires runs five other Grade 1 races. Churchill runs eleven Grade 2 races. The Louisville racetrack offers twenty-two Grade 3 events.

Graded races attract the most racebook money. Churchill Downs provides enough graded race action to keep your players entertained. Keep an eye out for Churchill’s condition book. Vice President of Racing Ben Huffman should release an updated condition book well before May 16.

Santa Anita will pick up where they left off

Santa Anita is in a different position than Churchill Downs.

The Southern California racetrack requires approvals to reopen. The Great Race Place is confident that the Los Angeles County Health Department will lift the ban.

On April 30, Santa Anita released a condition book. By doing so, the racetrack hopes to convince Los Angeles County that they can safely resume racing.

Like Churchill, Santa Anita runs races from Thursdays to Sundays. Also, like the Twin Spires, the Great Race Place will race on Memorial Day Monday, May 25.

The condition book didn’t provide a date for Santa Anita’s most popular horse race, the Santa Anita Derby. The SoCal racetrack lets fans know that they plan on running the S.A. Derby on Saturday, June 6.

June 6 was the day Belmont Park hoped to run the Belmont Stakes. The Belmont is the final jewel in horse racing’s Triple Crown. Belmont Park has yet to decide when they will open. That’s why the date for this year’s Belmont Stakes is in flux.

Santa Anita saw the open date and grabbed it. If Santa Anita does resume racing on May 15, expect a huge marketing push for the Santa Anita Derby. Digital racebook owners should ride the Great Race Place’s marketing coattails to increase horse racing action up to and on June 6.

Digital racebook reminders

Bookie agents should have a different point-of-view when it comes to their racebooks.

Horse races offer much higher odds than Moneyline sportsbook bets. Agents can’t take the chance of a massive payout on exotic horse wagers.

They must set maximum win limits. A maximum win limit caps how much profit players can win from a race.

Set a max win limit based on your level of risk. Also, set max bet limits. A good rule of thumb? Set a max bet limit that’s half of your max win limit. If you set a max win limit of $1,000, set a max bet limit of $500.

Move to PayPerHead during an unprecedented promotion

If you’re a bookie agent that runs a racebook, consider transferring your business to PayPerHead.

In response to the COVID-19 sports furlough, PayPerHead is running a promotion that offers free per head services from now until major U.S. sports return. Contact a sales representative at 800-605-4767 to learn more and get started.
